Houston's physician offices, dental groups, dermatology and med spa practices, urgent care clinics and veterinary hospitals, from the Texas Medical Center to Katy, The Woodlands, Pearland and Clear Lake, are mostly small-quantity generators under Texas rules: 50 pounds or less of medical waste a month. That changes what the rules ask of them, and it should change what they pay for.

The most common problem we see is not a compliance gap. It is a small practice paying for weekly service when it fills one container every few months. We size the container and the pickup interval to your generation rate and adjust as it changes.

What Texas requires for sharps

Sharps are one of the five regulated categories of medical waste in Texas (25 TAC 1.132(44); 30 TAC 326.3) and must be packaged in rigid, leak-resistant, sealed containers that meet 30 TAC 326.17 to 326.21 or 49 CFR 173.134 and 173.196.
A small-quantity generator (50 pounds or less a month) may store its own waste on site without a registration and may even carry its own waste; a large-quantity generator may not (30 TAC 326.31).
Untreated sharps shipped off site move only with a TCEQ-registered transporter; keep the signed shipping receipt and the treatment facility's certification for three years.
TCEQ guidance sets no day limit for storage before collection; once collected, putrescible waste held more than 72 hours is kept at 45°F or below.
