Is the pickup schedule tied to the 30-day storage limit?

It is one of the inputs. We set the interval from your generation rate and the Illinois limits together, so a container is never on site longer than the rule allows.

Can sharps go in the red bag with regulated medical waste?

No. Sharps need a dedicated rigid, puncture-resistant container. We supply the right container and collect both streams together.

From the Illinois Medical District and the Loop to Evanston, Oak Park, Naperville and Schaumburg, Chicago-area dental, physician, urgent care and veterinary practices generate sharps that Illinois regulates as potentially infectious medical waste (PIMW). Only a hauler with an Illinois EPA PIMW permit may carry them, and every shipment travels with a PIMW manifest.

The most common problem we see is not a compliance gap. It is a small practice paying for weekly service when it fills one container every few months. We size the container and the pickup interval to your generation rate and adjust as it changes.

What Illinois requires for sharps

Sharps containers must be rigid, leak-resistant, impervious to moisture, puncture-resistant and sealed for transport, labeled BIOHAZARD and Sharps with the international biohazard symbol on two opposite sides, plus the generator's name, address and phone number.
PIMW may be held 72 hours unrefrigerated, longer at or below 45°F, and never more than 30 days (Illinois EPA, 35 Ill. Adm. Code 1420).
Only an Illinois EPA-permitted PIMW hauler may transport it, with a PIMW manifest for each shipment; a manifest is not required only when less than 50 pounds is carried non-commercially at one time.
Sharps must be treated and rendered unrecognizable or properly packaged before they can go to a landfill (35 Ill. Adm. Code 1422).
